During the weekly Angelus prayer on January 4, Pope Leo XIV addressed the recent arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US authorities, expressing his concern for the Venezuelan population. He emphasized the importance of respecting the Venezuelan Constitution, stating, "The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over every other consideration," according to Vatican News.
Several US Bishops agreed with Pope Leo's comments. Still, they added that the exact rule-of-law requirement would need to be applied to protecting U.S. citizens and the U.S. Constitution from illegal immigration.
The Pope called on the international community to ensure the nation's sovereignty and uphold the rule of law as outlined in the Constitution. He stressed the need to respect human and civil rights for all and advocated collaborative efforts toward a future of peace, stability, and harmony, prioritizing support for economically disadvantaged communities.
